Cheraw High Media Center News
1/18/2008
Parents,  if you have seen your child reading more, it is probably due to our new Literacy initiative. Literacy Across the Curriculum, High Schools That Work, continues to be a priority for the teachers, students and administration.  We implemented this program at Cheraw High in an effort to help our students prepare for success during and after high school.  Parents who have concerns are encouraged to contact the school.  You will be directed to the person who can best answer your question.

Students who have attained 100 AR (Accelerated Reader) points will be invited to go to the theatre  in February or March - depending on the movie that is playing in Hartsville.  We will have the January Pizza Party at the end of the month.

Teachers are encouraged to book the media center early for work on research papers.  We ran out of days the first semester and several classes had to double up.  Since we will be testing (Exit and AP)  the last part of May, there will be fewer days available for classes.  I want to thank all the teachers for your cooperation as we move forward with the Literacy effort.  I know it has added to your work load tremendously, but it will get easier as time rolls on!

Participation in the Acceleratd Reader program is still strong.  Students are reading beyond our wildest expectation - and most seem to enjoy it!

We have student requests for purchase of new books and waiting lists for several serial books including
Daren Shan, Stephanie Meyers, and Scott Westerfeld

Remember, it only takes 20 points a month to get you an invitation to our monthly Pizza Parties and 100 points will earn you a seat on the bus to Hartsville movie theatre.

Happy Holidays!

We have more than 1000 AR books and tests to accompany them. Our first monthly Pizza Party will be coming up this Friday, October 5 for students who are participating in the AR Program. 36 students qualify for the September Party and are invited to the media center to eat pizza and have a drink during their lunch. Students need only attain 20 points to be invited to the party.

15 teachers are participating in NIE (Newspaper in Education) through The State newspaper in order to fulfill their reading and writing objectives for Literacy Across the Curriculum. We have an average of 130 papers arriving each day of the week.

150 new books have just arrived this week. They will be in the NEW BOOK section of the library, so come by and check them out! If there is a particular book you want, please see Mrs. B so she can order it.
